Start-stop technology in cars has been on the rise over the past decade as emissions and environmental concerns mount. In 2013, about 2% of passenger cars came equipped with start-stop systems. That number grew to more than 50% of all new gasoline non-hybrid vehicles in 2023, according to the 2024 EPA Automotive Trends Report. 

Given the widespread use of start-stop, in addition to added electrical components like GPS, lane assist, Bluetooth and more, modern passenger vehicles often need more than a conventional Flooded Lead Acid battery can offer. 

Manufacturers have turned to two enhanced versions of Lead Acid batteries to meet these demands: Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB). 

Both options offer the power and stability needed to support start-stop systems in modern vehicles. Choosing the right one for your car depends on the vehicle’s original battery specification, electrical load and driving profile. 

In this post, we will explain how EFB and AGM work, compare where each fits best with clear pros and cons, and outline pricing, installation and maintenance basics so you can choose your replacement with confidence. 

 

What Are EFBs? 

To understand EFBs, look at the battery name. EFBs are enhanced (or advanced) Lead Acid batteries. What makes it enhanced? It’s all inside the casing, where a polyfleece scrim stabilizes the active material, a reworked grid allows for better charge acceptance and carbon additives to the negative plate boost dynamic charge acceptance. 

 

What Are AGMs?

An AGM battery is an advanced battery with fiberglass separators that absorb liquid sulfuric acid — or the electrolyte of the battery — and store it in a dry state. This makes the battery safer in the event of a collision. Because of the absorbent separators, manufacturers can put more lead plates inside the battery, too, which increases power capacity.

AGM batteries are designed to provide more power for all types of vehicles, which is especially helpful for those that have many computerized systems for everything from driving assist functionality to smartphone connection. 

 



Comparison: AGM vs. EFB

Both AGMs and EFBs can be found in modern commuter vehicles with start-stop technology. AGM batteries have been used longer in start-stop applications and are often factory-specified for vehicles with regenerative braking or higher electrical demand. EFBs are newer on the scene, and are offering a more cost-effective way to handle basic start-stop duty in vehicles. 

AGMs are more standard in the U.S. as of right now, but European manufacturers have been quicker to pick up on the value of EFBs. Until about 2008, European automobile manufacturers used AGM as the go-to start-stop solution. Now, EFBs make up just as many OE installations as AGMs, and EFB is gaining ground.

Why are EFBs surging? 

Price. EFBs are more expensive than conventional Flooded Lead Acid batteries, but they cost 20% to 30% less than comparable AGMs. 

Performance. In a recent study commissioned by Stryten Energy, EFBs and AGMs went head-to-head, and some of the results cast doubt on the idea that AGMs always perform better. 

  • At 17.5% DoD, EFB delivered about 50% more total average capacity output than the same-size AGM over 18 weeks. 
  • In a high temperature test, EFBs absorbed 52% more energy than a comparable AGM, showing better stability in high temperature environments. 
  • Under start-stop-like pulses, EFBs matched AGMs in charge acceptance. 

 

Finding the Right Battery for Your Start-Stop Vehicle

A number of factors come into play when selecting the best battery for your start-stop vehicle.

Original battery. Before going all in on price and performance comparison, check the original equipment specification for your vehicle. If your car came with an AGM, most of the time you should opt for an AGM replacement. This is because the vehicle’s energy management system, charging strategy and safety requirements are calibrated for AGM’s characteristics: high charge acceptance for start-stop and recuperation, low internal resistance, and a sealed, non-spillable design often required for trunk or interior mounting.

In cars that came with an EFB, you could move to an AGM, but only if you’ve added greater electrical load, like premium audio, heated features or other accessories. 

Climate. Extreme temperatures, especially heat, can affect battery performance significantly. EFB batteries have shown superior performance in high-temperature conditions, absorbing 52% more energy than comparable AGM batteries during testing. This makes EFB particularly attractive for drivers in hot climates like Arizona, Texas, or southern California.

Cold weather impacts both battery types, but AGM batteries generally maintain better cold-cranking performance due to their lower internal resistance. However, modern EFB designs have closed much of this performance gap.

Usage. EFB batteries operate optimally at 60% depth of discharge, while AGM batteries can handle deeper discharges up to 80% of capacity. This means AGM batteries better suit vehicles with frequent extended electrical loads during engine-off periods. EFBs are a good choice for small- to mid-range commuter vehicles with start-stop systems. 

Warranty and service life. Battery warranties vary significantly by manufacturer, brand and product line. When shopping for either EFB or AGM batteries, compare warranty terms carefully, as coverage periods and conditions differ widely across brands and price points. Warranty length often reflects the manufacturer's confidence in the product's durability.
